An ‘Omage to Om Unit

Om-unit

Friends of mine will by now be bored of me going on about this guy, so it’s about time I got this out of my system.

I can’t actually keep up with all the quality produce pouring out of Jim Coles’s, aka Om Unit’s corner at the moment. The full releases, remixes, unofficial bootlegs, and associated content emerging from his own label Cosmic Bridge, make up a deludge of unique, futuristic bass heavy music. Taking in a wide range of influences (can’t be bothered to list them - you’ll work it out), he’s carving a niche of his own and showcasing some awesome new talent along the way. I think it’s also worth specifically noting that he’s responsible for the eye-opening Phillip D Kick series of Jungle Footwork edits, and along with another equally unique producer Machinedrum, makes up half of Dream Continuum.

This week’s Om Unit release is the Aeolian EP, out on Civil Music. The lead track Ulysses is a great example of the deep, dark and complex sounding 80/160bpm music that Mr Unit has been pushing in the last couple of months. Combining the frantic drum workouts of footwork music via Chicago, and the rudeboy pressure of vintage jungle/drum & bass, the result is a volatile musical compound.
